Some of the most recognizable pears, Bosc are easily identified by their cinnamon-brown skin and unique shape. The elongated neck of a Bosc pear sharply widens out to achieve a nicely rounded spherical form on the bottom. Bosc is famous for being one of the densest pears, meaning that they are incredibly durable and thrive in conditions where softer pears wouldn't stand a chance. Their thick outer skin and densely firm texture protects Bosc pears from both pests and harsh weather conditions.

Growing pears in the home garden

The Bartlett pear is the most common pear cultivar in the world. It is a European pear with large yellow fruit and smooth, juicy white flesh. Fruit trees need a minimum of 6-hours-8-hours sunlight daily, and need water. They are not drought tolerant. At maturity, it can reach a height and width between 12 ft.-20 ft. Ripens mid-August to mid-September. Requires 500-600 chill hours. They require a cross-pollinator with another European pear such as Baldwin or Hood.
