The reputation and history of Damascus steel has given rise to many legends, such as the ability to cut through a rifle barrel or to cut a hair falling across the blade. Today Damascus steel is highly desired for its beautiful marbled steel pattern, being particularly valued by knife-makers around the world. This one day course instructed by blacksmith Matt Mewburn will take students through the process of making a piece of Damascus steel.
Learn how to develop a pattern by understanding the properties of steel and achieve contrast between the steel alloys, then move on to forge-welding the steel alloys together and stacking the layers with the use of a Power Hammer. Students will reveal and develop the pattern using an acid etch and finish up by forging the completed billet to size.
To allow for close supervision, this intensive course has a small class size of 4 students.
You will get
-
A dramatic and beautiful Damascus steel billet
- Eye, ear and hand protection will be provided, however feel free to bring your own if you prefer.
